Charlie Tye
Founder, The HillSprings Learning Center
IDA-RMB Board Member
For many years, Charlie Tye dreamed of opening a school for students with learning differences. In 2001, Charlie, with the support of Janis Hannifin, a dedicated parent, began to research and plan a half-day school based on the highly successful Hill Center in Durham, North Carolina. Through commitment and determination, Charlie’s original dream came to fruition in the autumn of 2004, when The HillSprings Learning Center proudly opened its doors to twelve students.
Charlie served as the director of The HillSprings Learning Center from 2004 to 2013. Because of her vision, tenacity, and inspiration, our community will be forever grateful to Charlie for creating a school where students with learning differences become confident, independent learners.
Charlie Tye was an active member of the International Dyslexia Association – Rocky Mountain Branch for many years and served on its board of directors. Because teacher training and supporting students with dyslexia and other learning differences were so important to her, her family and friends have created a special way to honor her, a scholarship fund to help Colorado Springs educators attend the Reading in the Rockies conference.
